Quinta da Regaleira history

Quinta da Regaleira, at 900 meters from the historic center of Vila de Sintra, was built between 1904 and 1910, at the end of the Monarchy.
The romantic domains that once belonged to the Viscountess of Regaleira, were acquired and expanded by Dr. António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro (1848-1920) to build the center of his own “world”. Having a great fortune, which earned him the nickname Monteiro dos Míveis. He hired the Italian architect and scenographer Luigi Manini (1848-1936) for the architecture and landscape project, as well as the mastery of the sculptors, stonemasons and carvers who had worked with him at the Palace Hotel in Buçaco.
A man with a scientific spirit, a vast culture, a notable bibliophile, collector and great philanthropist, he left on this stone farm the vision of a cosmology, a synthesis of humanity’s spiritual memory, whose roots go back to the Portuguese and Universal Mythical Tradition. The architecture and art of the palace, chapel and other buildings were designed in the context of a garden of Paradise, highlighting the Neo-Manueline and Renaissance styles. The garden is a place of magic and mysteries.
It contains references to mythology, the Order of Christ (former Templars) and Alchemistry.

National Palace of Sintra history

Situated in the town’s historic centre, the National Palace of Sintra or Vila Palace, is a unique monument, distinguished by its outstanding historical, architectural and artistic value.
Of all the palaces built by the Portuguese monarchs throughout the Middle Ages, only the palace of Sintra has survived to the present day virtually intact, still maintaining the same essential features of its shape and outline since the mid-16th century. The main building campaigns that took place after the Christian Reconquest in the 12th century were sponsored by the kings Dinis, João 1 and Manuel 1, between the end of the 13th century and the mid-16th century.
These campaigns consisted of adaptations, enlargements and general improvement works that have given the palace its present-day appearance.
Open-air interior patios, where you can hear the water running, windows with arches, and painted tiles, highlight the Moorish connection.

Piriquita history

CASA PIRIQUITA
The bakery that would later be known as Piriquita was founded in 1862, about 160 years. Worked there Amaro dos Santos, a baker by trade and his wife Constância Gomes.
The name Piriquita comes from the nickname that King Carlos I gave Constância Gomes, based on her short stature. It was King Carlos I who encouraged the couple to bake the famous Queijadas, the sweet he enjoyed during his summers in Sintra. The success was immediate and fast the bakery turned into pastry.
Over the 160 years much has changed but too much remains the same, like the quality of the products and the family that is dedicated to serve its customers around the world. In the 40’s while much of the world was getting wrecked, in Sintra was born a new treasure. Constância Cunha, granddaughter of the founder, developed the Travesseiro, a pastry stuffed with sweet eggs and with a almond touch, but with the secret so well guarded that only the direct family has access to the stuffing recipe.
Today with the fifth generation this is a rare case of survival of a family project.
