Obradoiro Square

Plaza del Obradoiro history

Obradoiro Square (Plaza del Obradoiro) is the center of Santiago de Compostela. Its Galician name seems to come from the flowerbeds workshops that worked on the construction of the baroque façade of the Cathedral, which dominates the square and receives the thousands of pilgrims who arrive on the Camino de Santiago.
The buildings in the square are, the Cathedral; the Hostal de los Reyes Catolicos, today a former pilgrim’s hospital; the College of San Xerome, home of the university rectorate; and the Raxoi Palace, home of the Santiago City Hall – are representatives of the main centers of life in the Galician capital: religion, university education, attention to the pilgrim and the traveler.

Saint James Cathedral history

The apostle James the Elder is one of the twelve disciples of Jesus Christ. The brother of John, the evangelist, son of Zebedee and María Salome. Together with Peter and John, he belongs to a group of three privileged disciples who were admitted by Jesus at important moments in his life.
According to the Acts of the Apostles, James was the first apostle martyr, disqualified by order of Herod Agrippa around the year 43 AD in Jerusalem. Tradition tells how his body was transported by sea to other locations, being buried in a forest, where the Cathedral stands today.
Bernardo el Viejo, director, and Roberto, began construction of the Romanesque cathedral in 1075, under the reign of Alfonso the 6º and his bishop Dom Diego Peláez.
After this initial stage, there was a new impulse at the time of Arzobis Gelmírez, in the year 1100, by the Master of Cutlery. The construction of the Cathedral progresses throughout the 12th century, in 1168, Master Mateo, finishes the western structure and the choir in the nave.
In 1211 the consecration of the Basilica was celebrated with the presence of Alfonso 9th.
Although the medieval structure was mostly maintained, the fidelity of the Cathedral varied with its construction in the Renaissance of the Cloister and its ancient spaces, and throughout the Baroque, where works such as the main chapel, organs, head of the head of the Obradoiro, among other works.
During neoclassicism a new façade of the Azabachería was created and in recent years, several improvements were made.
