History of Ruins and Archaeological Museum of Carmo

The construction of the Carmo church dates back to 1389, driven by the desire and religious devotion of its founder, the Constable of the Kingdom, D. Nuno Álvares Pereira. Built on the hill opposite the castle of S. Jorge, due to its grandeur and monumentality, it rivaled the Cathedral of Lisbon and the Convent of S. Francisco in the same city. From an early age, this religious space was considered emblematic of the city of Lisbon and of the national identity itself, due to the fact that it was associated with the name of one of the most famous Portuguese heroes of the Middle Ages. By choosing the Carmo church for his burial, Nuno Álvares Pereira decisively marked the entire history of the Gothic monument.
The church and convent received several additions and alterations over time, adapting to new tastes and architectural and decorative styles, transforming itself into one of the richest and most powerful constructions in Lisbon. In 1755, the earthquake, which violently shook the city, caused serious damage to the building, aggravated by the subsequent fire that almost completely destroyed its contents. In 1756, its reconstruction began, already in neo-Gothic style, definitively interrupted in 1834, due to the extinction of the Religious Orders in Portugal. The pillars and arches of the naves date from this period of reconstruction, which are a true testimony of experimental neo-Gothic architecture, of a scenographic nature. In the mid-19th century, with the romantic taste for ruins and ancient medieval monuments prevailing, it was decided not to continue with the reconstruction of the building, leaving the body of the church’s naves open to the sky. A magical ruin scenario is thus created, which so pleased 19th-century aesthetes and which still enchants our contemporaries today. The Carmo ruins thus became a memorial to the 1755 earthquake.
The Carmo Archaeological Museum, located here, was founded in 1864 by the first president of the Association of Portuguese Archaeologists, Joaquim Possidónio Narciso da Silva (1806-1896). It was the first Museum of Art and Archeology in the country, and was born from the objectives of safeguarding the national heritage that was being dilapidated and deteriorating, as a result of the extinction of the Religious Orders and the countless damages inflicted during the French Invasions and the Liberal Wars.
In its first years of existence, it brought together a collection consisting of countless fragments of architecture and sculpture, as well as funerary monuments of great sculptural relief, tile panels, coat of arms, and many other objects of historical, artistic and archaeological interest. At the end of the 19th century and in the third quarter of the 20th century, important collections of art and archeology from different sources entered the Museum, among which stand out the collection of Roman epigraphy, the collection of pre-Columbian ceramics and mummies and the original collection of excavation of the Castro of Vila Nova de São Pedro, in Azambuja (Chalcolithic c.3500 BC), currently with about a thousand artifacts on permanent display.

History of National Palace of Belém

With more than 500 years of history, the National Palace of Belém has been, since the establishment of the Republic, the official residence of the President of the Portuguese Republic.
Its first owner was D. Manuel de Portugal, son of the counts of Vimioso. In the 16th century, he built a first palace, smaller, whose area will correspond to the current protocol rooms. It remained in the same family until 1726, when King D. João V bought the entire property from the 3rd Count of Aveiras, a descendant of the first owner, as well as several nearby farms. From then on, it became the residence of the royal family. Exceptionally, some sovereigns even resided in the Real Quinta de Belém: D. Catarina de Bragança, already after being widowed by Charles II of England; D. Maria II and her husband, D. Fernando II, between 1844 and 1846; D. Carlos and D. Amélia, still princes, when they got married.
With the establishment of the Republic, the Palace gained a new role, when it was chosen as the official residence of the President. In light of the egalitarian principles of the new regime, all Presidents who, during the First Republic (1910-1926) chose to live in the Palace of Belém, paid a monthly rent, initially of 100 escudos. This happened, for example, with Manuel de Arriaga and Bernardino Machado, or Teixeira Gomes, who paid an increased amount. This imposition was only revoked in 1928.
Over the past 100 years, many improvements have been made to the Palace and gardens. The appreciation of the entire set, with 2.5 hectares, culminated in the classification as a national monument, in 2007, also covering the 7.5 hectares of the Tropical Botanical Garden, the same Real Quinta de Belém until 1910.

History of MAAT – Museu de Arte, Arquitetura e Tecnologia

Launched in October 2016 as part of EDP Foundation’s long-lasting commitment to cultural patronage, the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (maat) is an international institution dedicated to fostering critical discourse and creative practice that inspire new understandings of the historical present and an empowering engagement with the common future.
Located on the riverfront of the historic district of Belém, in Lisbon, the EDP Foundation campus covers an area of 38,000 square metres and comprises a repurposed power station — the Central Tejo, an iconic example of industrial architecture originally built in 1908 — and a newly built complex designed by the London-based architecture studio AL_A (Amanda Levete Architects). Both buildings house exhibitions and events programmed by the museum and are connected by a landscape project by Lebanese architect Vladimir Djurovic.
Drawing upon the layered history preserved in its architectural and artistic heritage, maat advocates for the museum as a catalyst platform to render discourse actionable and empower audiences to own their choices through the articulation of debate, the sharing of positions and the formulation of knowledge. With the aim of encouraging an open-ended and transformative relationship between cultural institutions and societal change, the museum simultaneously interrogates and celebrates the intellectual ambitions and the creative means through which we imagine (with art), inhabit (with architecture) and create (with technology) the world we live in — that is, the ways in which we constantly redesign our collective undertakings in respect of the planetary ecosystem we belong to.
