Jerónimos Monastery history
The Jerónimos Monastery (or Royal Monastery of Santa Maria de Belém) was built by King Dom Manuel 1st in 1501, after Vasco da Gama returned from discovering the Maritime Route to the Indies. Donated to the Jerónimos monks, who remained here until the middle of the 19th century, the Jerónimos Monastery is a true “song” in the Manueline style due to its construction with religious, nautical and Portuguese Royal elements, carved into the stone. The monastic complex still preserves, to this day, in addition to the Manueline church, most of the magnificent convent areas that contributed to its international fame, including the 16th century Cloister, the old monks’ refectory and the Old Bookstore room.
