History of the Prado Museum
The Royal Museum of Painting and Sculpture, which in 1868 was renamed the National Museum of Painting and Sculpture and later the Prado National Museum, was opened on November 19, 1819 with 311 paintings from the Royal Collection, all by Spanish authors. Its mission is to preserve, exhibit and enrich the set of collections and works of art, linked to the history of Spain.
In 2019 it celebrated its Bicentenary.
