Palace of Queluz history

The Palace of Queluz and its gardens are, in Portugal, one of the most beautiful examples of the style of construction used by the nobility in the 18th and 19th centuries. These were centuries in which the architectural styles were Baroque, Rococo and Neoclassicism.

Ordered to be built in 1747 by the future King Pedro 3rd, king consort of Queen Maria 1st (mother of Dom Pedro and Dom Miguel), the Palace of Queluz was built to be the summer residence of the Royal Family, which inhabited it from 1794 until the departure for Brazil, in 1807, following Napoleon’s invasions of Portugal.
The Palace still has several pieces of furniture used by royalty throughout the ages. The room where Dom Pedro 4th was born and died is almost as it was then.
A charming stroll through the gardens, the water channel, where Queen Carlota Joaquina, use to took the princes, Pedro and Miguel, in a small boat. The tiles, the shapes of the flowerbeds, the stones, everything heightens our senses.

Pena Palace history

The Palácio da Pena, was built at the top of the Serra de Sintra, it is the second highest point in the Serra de Sintra (above the palace, is Cruz Alta, 528 meters above sea level).
In 1838, King Fernando 2nd acquired the old convent of the Jerónimos monks of Nossa Senhora da Pena, which had been built at the top of the Serra de Sintra in 1511 by King Manuel 1st, which had been abandoned since 1834 with the extinction of religious orders.
The convent consisted of the cloister, chapel, sacristy and bell tower, which today constitute the northern nucleus of the Palácio da Pena, or Palácio Velho.
To enter the Palace, you have to climb the steep ramp that Baron de Eschwege built. The Palace has two wings, the former Manueline convent of the Order of Saint Jerome and the wing built in the 19th century by King Fernando 2nd. These wings are surrounded by a third structure, which resembles an imaginary castle with round roads with merlons and battlements, watchtowers, an access tunnel and even a drawbridge.
King Fernando 2nd ordered the Parque da Pena to be planted around the Palace, in the style of romantic gardens, with winding paths, pavilions and stone benches punctuating the paths, as well as trees and other plants from the four corners of the world, taking advantage of the humid climate of the Sintra mountains and creating an exotic park with more than five hundred species.

Capuchos monks Convent history

The Convento dos Capuchos, also known as Convento da Cortiça, the conventual construction was promoted, in 1560, by Dom Álvaro de Castro, state advisor to King Dom Sebastião, who dreamed of building a simple temple on that site, dedicated to the practices of contemplation and of introspection. This convent, where cork was used in coverings and decoration. It was named Convent of Santa Cruz da Serra de Sintra. The philosophy and ideals of the Order of Saint Francis of Assisi were the search for spiritual improvement through isolation from the world and renunciation of the pleasures associated with life on earth.
For around 250 years, the convent remained a place of worship and pilgrimage, inhabited by Franciscan Friars who the local population considered “holy men”. One of the notable friars in the history of this house was Friar Honório who, according to legend, spent the last decades of his life isolated, in a small cave in the convent’s woods, after having given in to temptation. However, in 1834, after the extinction of the Religious Orders in Portugal, the convent was abandoned and was later purchased by the 2nd Count of Penamacor, who, in 1873, sold the property to the 1st Viscount of Monserrate, Francis Cook.
