Arte Antiga Museum history

The National Museum of Ancient Art houses the most complete public collection in the country. Paintings, sculptures, decorative arts, Portuguese and European, from the Middle Ages to the 19th century.
Located in the Palácio dos Condes de Alvor, in Santos, its garden (with restaurant and terrace) has an exceptional view over the Tagus River and the port of Lisbon.
Opened on June 12, 1884, the National Museum of Ancient Art fulfills an old aspiration that arose after the abolition of religious orders, in 1834, to provide a destination for works of art that at that time passed into the possession of the State.

History of National Tile Museum

The collection of the National Tile Museum covers tile production from the second half of the 15th century to the present. The collection includes pieces of ceramics, porcelain and earthenware from the 16th century to the present day. At the beginning of the permanent exhibition there is a small section that illustrates the materials and manufacturing techniques for tiles. From this brief introduction, the expository path follows a chronological organization.
Created in 1965, it became the Azulejo Museum in 1980, housed in the former Convent of Madre de Deus, founded in 1509 by Queen Dona Leonor. The building underwent transformations due to several construction campaigns, highlighting the 16th century Mannerist cloister, the church, decorated with important sets of paintings and tile coverings, the sacristy, with a wooden chest from Brazil and carved frames incorporating paintings , the high choir, with rich gilded ornamentation, the chapel of Santo António, with 18th century baroque decoration and a large number of canvases by the painter André Gonçalves.
