Jerónimos Monastery history
The Jerónimos Monastery or Royal Monastery of Santa Maria de Belém, was ordered to be built by King Dom Manuel 1st, in the year 1501, after Vasco da Gama returned from discovering the Maritime Route to the Indies, and brought boats full of spices.
Donated to the Jerónimos monks, who lived here until 1834. The Jerónimos Monastery, built in the Gothic Style, but with added religious, maritime and Portuguese Royal elements, carved into the stone, became known as the Manueline style of construction.
The Manueline Church continues to celebrate masses, baptisms and weddings.
The Cloister, the old monks’ refectory and the Old Bookstore room are preserved.
