Capuchos monks Convent history

The Convento dos Capuchos, also known as Convento da Cortiça, the conventual construction was promoted, in 1560, by Dom Álvaro de Castro, state advisor to King Dom Sebastião, who dreamed of building a simple temple on that site, dedicated to the practices of contemplation and of introspection. This convent, where cork was used in coverings and decoration. It was named Convent of Santa Cruz da Serra de Sintra. The philosophy and ideals of the Order of Saint Francis of Assisi were the search for spiritual improvement through isolation from the world and renunciation of the pleasures associated with life on earth.
For around 250 years, the convent remained a place of worship and pilgrimage, inhabited by Franciscan Friars who the local population considered “holy men”. One of the notable friars in the history of this house was Friar Honório who, according to legend, spent the last decades of his life isolated, in a small cave in the convent’s woods, after having given in to temptation. However, in 1834, after the extinction of the Religious Orders in Portugal, the convent was abandoned and was later purchased by the 2nd Count of Penamacor, who, in 1873, sold the property to the 1st Viscount of Monserrate, Francis Cook.

Moorish Castle history

The Moorish Castle is the result of the occupation of Sintra over time, interventions carried out during the first dynasty, initiated by King Afonso Henriques after the capture of Lisbon and Santarém (1147), until the use of the fortification during the reign of King Ferdinand 1st (1383), the damage caused by the 1755 earthquake, the restoration works of King Ferdinand 2nd in the 19th century and the romantic taste of the time.
The work made it possible to identify a medieval Christian cemetery, silos and foundations of Muslim houses, as well as objects and artefacts from the Bronze Age, the Iron Age and the Neolithic, highlighting a complete ceramic vase from the 5th millennium BC.

Palace and Park of Monserrate history

4 kilometers from the center of Sintra, are the Monserrate Palace and Park, from the 19th century, where the exotic and vegetal motifs of the interior decoration extend harmoniously outside. The lawn in front of the palace allows for a well-deserved rest while discovering one of the richest Portuguese botanical gardens and one of the most beautiful Romantic landscape creations in Portugal.
Quinta de Monserrate was leased by Gerard de Visme (1789), a wealthy English merchant, who built a house there in neo-Gothic style. William Beckford subleased Monserrate in 1793-1794 but, by 1809, when Lord Byron visited the property, the house was already in ruins. The sublime appearance of the property was a source of inspiration for the poet, who sang Monserrate in his work Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage.
One of the famous visitors was Francis Cook, an Englishman later honored by King D. Luís with the title of Viscount of Monserrate in 1856. The Palace of Monserrate, which displays, in its decoration, medieval and orientalizing influences, is, with the Palace da Pena, one of the most important examples of romantic architecture in Portugal.
Species from all over the world were organized by geographic areas, from Mexico, reflecting the diverse origins of the plants and composing scenes along paths, among ruins, corners, lakes and waterfalls. Thanks to the painter William Stockdale and the master gardener Francis Burt and Francis Cook, we can find Monserrate Park as it is.
There are also species from Sintra (such as arboreal strawberry trees, holly trees and imposing cork oaks). Ancestral araucaria and palm trees, tree ferns from Australia and New Zealand and agaves and yuccas that recreate a scene from Mexico. On this tour of the five continents through botany, camellias, azaleas, rhododendrons and bamboo also stand out, evoking a garden in Japan.

Quinta da Regaleira history

Quinta da Regaleira, at 900 meters from the historic center of Vila de Sintra, was built between 1904 and 1910, at the end of the Monarchy.
The romantic domains that once belonged to the Viscountess of Regaleira, were acquired and expanded by Dr. António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro (1848-1920) to build the center of his own “world”. Having a great fortune, which earned him the nickname Monteiro dos Míveis. He hired the Italian architect and scenographer Luigi Manini (1848-1936) for the architecture and landscape project, as well as the mastery of the sculptors, stonemasons and carvers who had worked with him at the Palace Hotel in Buçaco.
A man with a scientific spirit, a vast culture, a notable bibliophile, collector and great philanthropist, he left on this stone farm the vision of a cosmology, a synthesis of humanity’s spiritual memory, whose roots go back to the Portuguese and Universal Mythical Tradition. The architecture and art of the palace, chapel and other buildings were designed in the context of a garden of Paradise, highlighting the Neo-Manueline and Renaissance styles. The garden is a place of magic and mysteries.
It contains references to mythology, the Order of Christ (former Templars) and Alchemistry.
