History of Saint George Castle
The fortification, built by Muslims in the mid-11th century, was the last stronghold of defense for the elites living in the citadel, the Moorish Mayor, whose palace was nearby, and the city’s administrative elites.
After the conquest of Lisbon, on October 25, 1147, by Dom Afonso Henriques, first king of Portugal. Transformed into a Royal Palace by the kings of Portugal in the 13th century, São Jorge Castle was the place chosen to receive illustrious national and foreign characters, to hold parties and to acclaim themselves Kings throughout the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries.
Until the beginning of the 16th century, São Jorge Castle enjoyed its golden period as a royal space. The old buildings from Islamic times were adapted and expanded to accommodate the King, the Court, the Bishop and install the royal archive in one of the castle’s towers.
With the integration of Portugal into the Crown of Spain, in 1580, São Jorge Castle acquired military use. However, it was after the Lisbon earthquake of 1755, with the appearance of new buildings that hid the older ruins.
With the restoration works of 1938, the castle and the remains of the old Royal Palace were rediscovered.
