Lisbon Cathedral history

Dating back to 1150, the Lisbon Cathedral is also known as the Lisbon Sé.
Construction of the Cathedral began in 1150, three years after the first King of Portugal, Dom Afonso Henriques, conquered the city from the Moors. A Muslim Mosque once stood on the site.
Architecturally, it was designed in the Romanesque style of the time, also found in the Cathedral of Coimbra, but in the following centuries it underwent significant transformations in the Gothic style, built by Dom Afonso IV (1291-1357) for his family’s Pantheon.
Inside, the chapel of Bartolomeu Joanes, the private chapel of a prominent bourgeois of medieval Lisbon, and the cloister with an irregular plan, an innovative work in the Portuguese Gothic style built by King Dom Dinis (1261-1325).
In the 17th and 18th centuries, Baroque works were carried out, particularly decoratively on the altars and in the chancel. In the first half of the 20th century, the medieval appearance of the Cathedral was restored.
