Lisbon Cathedral history

Dating back to 1150, the Cathedral of Lisbon is also called the Lisbon Sé.
The construction of the Cathedral began 3 years after the first king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques, conquered the city from the Moors, in 1147. There was a Muslim mosque on the site. It is one of the symbols of Lisbon and also of the Christian reconquest of the territory.
In terms of architecture, it was born according to the Romanesque style of the time, also present in the Cathedral of Coimbra, but in the following centuries it underwent important transformations in the Gothic style, in which the “Deambulatório” stands out, built by King Afonso the 4th (1291- 1357) to his family pantheon.
Inside, the chapel of Bartolomeu Joanes, private chapel of an important bourgeois of medieval Lisbon, and the cloister with an irregular plan, an innovative work in the Portuguese Gothic style, commissioned by King Dinis (1261-1325), deserve mention.
In the 17 and 18 centuries, works were carried out in the Baroque style, particularly at the decorative level on the altars and chancel. In the first half of the 20 century, the restoration of the medieval character of the Cathedral was carried out.
