Coach Museum history
The New Coach Museum brings space to the collection of old carriages. It includes spaces for permanent and temporary exhibitions, reserve areas and a conservation and restoration workshop. It has restaurant spaces and a Museum Store.
The Royal Picadeiro
On May 23, 1905, the «Museu dos Coches Reaes» was opened in Lisbon, an initiative of Queen Amélia d’Orleães and Bragança, princess of France and married in 1886 to the future king of Portugal, Dom Carlos the 1st. The first coach museum in the world was the hall of the old Picadeiro Real, which from that date until May 23, 2015 housed the National Coach Museum. The success was great, but from the beginning the lack of space was felt and it was the Queen herself who in 1906 commissioned a project to expand the museum. With the establishment of the Republic on October 5, 1910, the museum’s collection increased with the arrival of a set of coaches and marbles from the extinct Royal House and vehicles from the church.
The Old Riding Arena can be visited, with coaches, the royal family’s painting gallery, as well as a set of cavalry accessories.
