History of Lisbon Oceanarium

Opened in 1998, during the last world exhibition to take place in the 20th century, entitled “The oceans, a heritage for the future”, the Oceanário de Lisboa has eternalised the centuries-old bond between Lisbon and the ocean.

The Oceanário de Lisboa is a large public aquarium whose prestige is widely recognised, not only in Lisbon and Portugal, but also across the world. Visited by approximately 1 million people every year, the Oceanário is the most popular cultural attraction in Portugal.

The excellent exhibitions organised by the Oceanário and the architectural features of its buildings, full of symbolism, allow for a unique, unforgettable experience. The Oceanário consists of two buildings connected by a large forecourt: the original Edifício dos Oceanos (“Oceans Building”) and the new Edifício do Mar (“Sea Building”). The forecourt, from which the exhibitions and the educational area can be accessed, boasts a magnificent panel featuring 55 thousand tiles.
As a modern aquarium, it is committed to continuously developing educational activities aimed at encouraging people to learn more about the oceans and marine species. The Oceanário also focuses on its mission and seeks to draw people’s attention to current environmental issues. In this sense, it collaborates with several institutions with a view to promoting ocean sustainability, by supporting scientific research and marine biodiversity conservation projects. The Oceanário de Lisboa employs a team of highly qualified biologists and engineers who ensure the quality of its exhibitions and provide consulting services to several aquariums and similar institutions.
On the basis of the pedagogic, scientific and cultural purposes of Oceanário’s activity, the Portuguese government classified the use and administration of Oceanário de Lisboa’s premises a public service in March 2015. Oceanário de Lisboa, S.A. was granted the concession for these activities.
In addition to this classification as a public service, in September 2015 the Portuguese government approved the disposal of all shares of Oceanário de Lisboa, S.A. to Sociedade Francisco Manuel dos Santos, SGPS, S.A. on the overall strength of its proposal. Sociedade Francisco Manuel dos Santos, SGPS, S.A. created the Oceano Azul Foundation in December 2016, which is currently the sole shareholder of Oceanário de Lisboa, S.A. Its mission is to work towards a productive and healthy ocean for the benefit of the planet.
The Oceanário de Lisboa has implemented an Integrated Quality and Environmental management System as part of its development strategy. It was the first public aquarium in Europe to achieve the ISO 9001, 14001 and EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) Quality Certifications.

Piriquita history

CASA PIRIQUITA
The bakery that would later be known as Piriquita was founded in 1862, about 160 years. Worked there Amaro dos Santos, a baker by trade and his wife Constância Gomes.
The name Piriquita comes from the nickname that King Carlos I gave Constância Gomes, based on her short stature. It was King Carlos I who encouraged the couple to bake the famous Queijadas, the sweet he enjoyed during his summers in Sintra. The success was immediate and fast the bakery turned into pastry.
Over the 160 years much has changed but too much remains the same, like the quality of the products and the family that is dedicated to serve its customers around the world. In the 40’s while much of the world was getting wrecked, in Sintra was born a new treasure. Constância Cunha, granddaughter of the founder, developed the Travesseiro, a pastry stuffed with sweet eggs and with a almond touch, but with the secret so well guarded that only the direct family has access to the stuffing recipe.
Today with the fifth generation this is a rare case of survival of a family project.

History of Lisbon Chair lift

The Nations Park Gondola Lift was inaugurated on March of 1998 for the International Exposition of Lisbon (EXPO’98), nowadays, it is one of the mandatory touristic attractions of this leisure area in Lisbon. This aerial lift is owned by the company Telecabine Lisboa, which is responsible for the exploitation and maintenance of the installation. The Gondola Lift was one of the biggest attractions of the EXPO’98, having recorded a huge affluence of passengers.
This installation is endowed with 40 closed cabins with automatic doors and capacity for 8 passengers spread over two seats. The course develops on the estuary of the Tagus River, a few meters from the riverfront, with the towers massifs seated on the riverbed. The towers have a reduced visual impact. The South terminal (where the drive is) is located on Passeio de Neptuno, next to the Oceanarium and the North terminal (where the cable tensioning system is housed and also where the offices are) is located on Passeio das Tágides, next to the old Vasco da Gama Tower, now the Myriad Hotel. The access and exit areas and the ticket offices are at ground level and the equipments are in the upper floors of the terminals, in other words, the stations. The buildings and all the equipments including stations, towers and cabins are white and/or blue in color in a beautiful contrast between the blue sky and the river.
The trip lasts 8 to 12 minutes on a course of 1230 meters, hovering over the Tagus River at 30 meters high, where we see a breathtaking panorama of the Nations Park including the Oceanarium, the Portugal Pavilion, the towers of St. Gabriel and St. Raphael, the Atlantic Pavilion (Meo Arena), the Vasco da Gama Tower (Myriad Hotel) and the Vasco da Gama Bridge. A magnificent and unique experience.
