History of National Palace of Belém

With over 500 years of history, the Palácio Nacional de Belém has been the official residence of the President of the Portuguese Republic since the establishment of the Republic.
The first owner was Dom Manuel de Portugal, son of the Counts of Vimioso. In the 16th century, he built a smaller palace. It remained in the family until 1726, when King João 5th, bought the property from the 3rd Count of Aveiras, as well as several nearby farms. From then on, it became the residence for the royal family. Exceptionally, some sovereigns even lived in the Royal Estate of Belém, such as Queen Catarina de Bragança, after being widowed by King Charles 2nd of England, Queen Maria 2nd and her husband, King Fernando 2nd, between 1844 and 1846, and King Carlos and Queen Amélia, still princes, when they married. With the establishment of the Republic, it was chosen as the official residence of the President of the Republic. Classified as a national monument in 2007, along with the Tropical Botanical Garden.

Mr. Calouste Gulbenkian history

Calouste Gulbenkian (1869-1955) arrived in Portugal during the Second World War and fell in love with the country, staying here to reside. After death left the fortune to create a foundation, with the purpose to foster the national culture, and that bears his name.
He was born in Turkey and studied in England, later adopting the nationality of that country.
Son of wealthy families, he increased personal wealth by using his knowledge to mediate negotiations between Eastern and European countries seeking new sources of raw energy, namely oil.
In 1942 he arrived in Portugal. He came sick and in the confusion of the war he ended up staying longer than he had expected, falling in love with the country.
He left part of his fortune and his art collection to a foundation created with his name. It is one of the most important cultural foundations of the country.

Pousada of Queluz history

A historic Hotel, the Pousada Palácio de Queluz, also called Pousada Dona Maria I, is located in the Clock Tower building, next to Queluz National Palace. The town of Queluz is close to the beaches of Cascais, the Sintra mountain range, the golf courses and 14 km from Lisbon.
In the second half of the 18th century, one of the last phases of the Royal Palace of Queluz, during the reign of D. Maria I, was built, in front of the palace, but being part of the same architectural complex, the clock tower as well as the annex building for the royal guard, the administration house and the stables.
The layout of the construction is attributed to Manuel Caetano de Sousa, considered by many like the last representative of the baroque national delay, that happened to the architects of the palace, Mateus Vicente and Jean Baptiste Robillion.
Attached to the clock tower, which has three plans and two registers, the first with a clock and the second with the bells topped by a bulbous dome, a building is developed in whose main façade there are windows and doors of cut pediment.
In the 1990s, the construction of the Pousada was carried out, and the original façade was completely retained and the interior was deeply reformulated to meet the new needs. The Pousada was inaugurated in 1995.

Belem Pastery history

Since 1837.
At the beginning of the Nineteenth Century, in Belém, next to Mosteiro dos Jerónimos (the Heironymite Monastery) there was a sugar cane refinery attached to a small general store. As a result of the 1820 liberal revolution, all convents and monasteries in Portugal were shut down in 1834, the clergy and labourers expelled.
In an attempt at survival, someone from the monastery offered sweet pastries for sale in the shop; pastries that rapidly became known as ‘Pastéis de Belém’.
At that period the area of Belém was considered far from the city of Lisbon and mainly accessed by steam-boats. At the same time, the grandeur of the monastery and the Torre de Belém (the Belém Tower) attracted visitors who soon grew used to savouring the delicious pastries originated in the monastery.
In 1837, the baking of the “Pastéis de Belém”, began in the buildings attached to the refinery, following the ancient ‘secret recipe` from the monastery. Passed on and known exclusively to the master confectioners who hand-crafted the pastries in the ‘secret room’, this recipe remained unchanged to the present day.
